Survey Says Mom Prefers Personal Gifts

(NUI) - Want to make an impact on mom this Mother's Day? Don't just take her to dinner or give her a card. Give her a card and a gift that could only come from you.

"With more than 150 million Mother's Day cards sent each year, it's obvious that children are doing a good job of recognizing mom," said Tressa Angell, product manager for Mother's Day cards at Hallmark. "But what makes the recognition really meaningful to her is personalization."

A recent survey by Hallmark revealed 83 percent of mothers keep their Mother's Day card when it includes a personal note.

"Moms tell us that they want to feel loved and appreciated on their special day in a way that says their children know them," Angell said. "A handwritten message about the sender's feelings or specific relationship adds to the emotion or meaning of the card."

And making the day personal extends to the gifts that the card accompanies.

"I think a lot of times children forget to tell and show mom how much she means to them throughout the year," Angell said. "A heartfelt card or gift can accomplish that."

To create a personal gift, Keith Yocham, a product manager for Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments, suggests a selection from the new Heart of Motherhood collection.

Each piece in the collection is a silver-plated ornament inscribed with a message, such as "A Grandmother's Treasure" or "A Mother's Touch" to which gift givers can add a variety of charms - birthstones, tags that can be engraved with children's names, year-dated tokens, picture lockets and the like - to create a personalized keepsake. Each Heart of Motherhood ornament comes with a stand for year-round display.

This year, with more than 80 percent of households planning to celebrate Mother's Day, Hallmark is offering more than 1,100 different Mother's Day card designs.

These cards and gifts are available at more than 4,300 Hallmark Gold Crown stores nationwide and wherever Hallmark cards are sold. For more information, visit www.hallmark.com.
