Choose Pets, Computers As Presents Carefully

(NUI) - You have saved up some money and want to bring home something special for the holidays this year. You can't wait to see the look on your children's faces when an adorable puppy with a big bow around its neck runs out to greet them as they open their gifts.

Or perhaps technology has finally surpassed your computer and you've decided to surprise your family with a new one.

Although these gifts are likely to lift your family's spirits, keep in mind that both are long-term commitments. So choose carefully.

If your holiday shopping list includes a pet or a new computer, here are some things to do before you buy:

  • Do research and shop around. Avoid last-minute shopping for these important purchases. Select a pet that will fit best into your household because, in essence, you are welcoming a new family member into your home. Your decision should be based on the prospective pet's behavior, activity level, training needs, food and housing requirements, and general disposition. When shopping for a computer, remember that it's much like buying a car. There are many to choose from. The first thing to do is decide what minimum requirements your computer will need. Then do research for the best system you can get within your budget. Always buy a computer from a reputable electronics dealer.
  • Consider future costs. Both pets and computers will incur additional expenses for your family. A pet will need routine veterinary care, food and other provisions which can become expensive. Be sure the recipients of your gift are prepared to provide for a pet throughout its lifetime, typically eight to 15 years or more. A computer will likely need periodic upgrades and maintenance. Also consider the cost of new software and accessories.
  • Know your recipients' lifestyle. In bringing home a pet, take into account what kinds of pets your family members like, any allergies they may have, and if they have time and money to take on the added responsibility. For a computer, consider the recipients' needs. Will it be used to surf the Internet, to send e-mail, for word processing, for graphics or for playing games? Would they prefer a desktop or a laptop? Know this information before you shop.
