Steps in Creating a Budget

First- keep track of all your expenses and income for a few months. You must keep track of everything for this to be effective.

Secondly, separate your expenses into categories and take an average of your expenses for each category. Listed below are sample categories:

  • Housing (mortgage or rent payment, insurance, utilities, phone, and maintenance)
  • Food
  • Automobile (payment, maintenance, gas, taxes, registration, and insurance)
  • Debt
  • Insurance
  • Entertainment and Recreation
  • Clothing
  • Medical and Dental
  • Savings

Thirdly, determine if you are spending more than you are earning. If you are or you are not saving, decide which categories you could cut back in. Write your new figures down, and stick to them. Actively, look for ways to save money in each category.
