7 Online Dating Safety Strategies

By Caterina Christakos

When you correspond with someone online it can sometimes give you a false sense of intimacy. You email each other, im, and chat back and forth and suddenly it seems like you have known each other forever.

Let's face it there are people that have been married for years that don't have that sense of closeness that comes with this type of communication.

It is important to realize that even the most intelligent, loveable emails can disguise some less than attractive qualities and even some dangerous tendencies.

Further your romance. Take it to the next level, by all means, but do it safely.

  • Correspond by email for at least two weeks before thinking about meeting him or her.
  • Proceed to phone conversations for at least another week and trust your instincts if you get any "bad vibes."
  • When you are ready to meet, make sure that it is in a public place.
  • Make sure to tell someone where you are going and who you are meeting.
  • If you have a cell phone take it.
  • Drive yourself to your meeting place. That way you don't have to let him or her drive you home.
  • If you can arrange a double date, do it. That way others know what this person looks like and it is less likely that he or she will act badly if they know you have people who care about you.

Remember dating is fun and there are lots of nice people online looking for love. Just be careful along the way.
