4.5 million children are injured in the home every year and home accidents are the leading cause of death for children under 15 years old. However, children are not the only ones who are at risks for accidents in the home. The elderly are also at risk, and people of all ages and genders have been injured or killed by a home accident. Therefore, providing a safe environment for all family members is crucial in providing for a healthy family.
General Safety Guidelines to Protect Everyone in The Family
- Make sure furniture and rugs are secure and not easily moved.
- Furniture should not have sharp corners.
- Keep floors uncluttered, especially stairs.
- Keep rooms and stairs well lit.
- Keep electrical cords in good condition and neatly put away. Do not overload extension cords.
- Unplug electrical appliances not in use.
- Set water heater temperature between 100 and 120 degrees to prevent scalding.
- Wipe up spills immediately from floors.
- Install smoke detectors. Do a monthly safety check.
- Have a fire extinguisher in the home, and know how to use it. Have it serviced once a year.
- Handles of pots and pans should be turned towards the back of the stove.
- Wash hands before and after preparing food, eating, and toileting or diapering.
- Store flammable liquids and household chemicals according to directions on container.
- Do not put any flammable materials near heat.
- Have monthly fire drills for the whole family.
- Remove peeling paint and lead based paint.
- Lock up and store firearms in a safe place that is unknown to others.
- Make sure the yard is free from clutter and dangerous materials.
- Use sunscreen when outside.
- A 4-6 foot high fence should fence in pools.
- Keep pets clean and up to date on vaccinations.
- Anyone riding a bike should wear a helmet.
- Store medications only in the labeled container provided by the pharmacist. Also, if children are in the home, be sure to put medications out of the reach.
